Duplicate Detective: Cleaner App Reviews

Great App

Depending how mess-up your photo Library is or for rhat matter you HDD is this will start the process of removing Duplicates. It can find dups based on file name and can auto remove based on dates, or just automatically. Really cuts down on wasted space and time it takes to recover.

Fast and Easy Duplicate Removal

Scans selected drives and directories for duplicates; detects folders with similar contents as well, not just the file level. Duplicates are then presented in greatest size to least so that the minimal number of deletions can result in the largest recovery of disk space. One can keep many, all, or none of the dupliates. Very convenient to use. The only missing feature I see is the ability to select a preferred directory when presented with a lot of common choices.

WAY BETTER than MacPaw Gemini!!!

I have them both and am using them side by side. The “Gemini” was taking up to 10-15 minutes to delete what The Duplicate Detective did in a minute or two! DD also scanned WAY faster!

Finally

over 150000 photos and videos… It took a while but trimmed down 50 gig in duplicatephotos and movies alone. (Yes I know only a moron would have that many duplicated files.) Having made the switich from PC to MAC I have discovered it is much wasier to duplicate groups of files while transfering between locations than on PC. This program works the way a dupicate file finder should work. It finds what it thinks are duplicates and makes it easy to double check. (it never missed)

Very happy - Freed up loads of space on my Mac!

I rarely take the time to write reviews, but this one saved my butt! I was down to a critical amount of storage space left due to my external hard drive crashing on me, so I thought I’d give this a try. I knew that I had tons of duplicate files but was unsure of how to find most of them. This app is AWESOME. All you have to do is select the file you want to scan, then hit “auto select” which then does the work of selecting your duplicates for you (If you want it to, that is. You can do it manually as well.). Once you are sure that you want to delete the duplicates, just hit “clean” and it dumps them in your trash can for you. After that, all you need to do is empty your trash. I now have over 20GB of free space - all from unecessary duplicate files collecting dust! Very user friendly, FAST, and pretty much fail proof. Just read each step by step before you go hitting buttons. I would have gladly paid more than $2.99 :)

Outstanding App

With a lot of files - either music or photo, it may take a while to analyze them - but the analysis is worth the wait and is in depth. The app tells you exactly each duplicate file is located, shows you the file or allows you to listen to the song prior to choosing whether to eliminate it. It also shows the size of each duplicate file grouped with it’s duplicates for comparison. For the price it’s a bargain. Outstanding development work as you can select folder by folder to analyze. I love this program and didn’t find a single error even when duplicate files were in different sub folders. Great Job Fiplab :)

13GB freed in minutes. Fast, functional app.

Simply the best duplicate file finder app that I’ve used. The design is simple and logically laid out and within about 2 minutes of opening the app, I had scanned a large part of my computer and selected about 13GB worth of duplicates that I didn’t know were adding up to that size. Nevertheless, ended up saving 13GB (12.8GB to be precise) in a couple of minutes, giving my slightly ageing Mac a new lease of life and space.

It does the job just fine.

I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because is somewhat too good to be true. It will show you how many versions of the same file you have, where they are and if you want you can tell it just to keep the newest one and get rid of the rest and that is it. I just save 1TB.

It froze

Just downloaded this piece of work. Selected a folder for it to scan, and it froze. I’ve literally never had an apple app freeze on me in the 10 years I’ve been using apple.

Too long to sort

Does an excellent job sorting and identifying. Sorts in minutes then takes a couple of hours to sort on my Mac - thousands of duplicates. Oh yes, when you click next you can’t move back to the files, the only option is to start over. At least two hours. Needs a back button.

eeeh, not really

Not a computer person…inadvertantly triple downloaded my iTunes library swithcing from pc to MAC. iTunes duplicate finder works great unless you need to delete 11,000 songs… I bought Duplicate Detective hoping it would help remove them from my iTunes library…No so..It left toooooo many duplicates behind. After buying and trying the app, I attempted to contact the support team, I get a pop up telling me that FipLab recomends using iTunes to solve my problem!

Easy to Master

I have over 14,000 items in my Photo library. What a chore to go through them individually looking for duplicates. This software was inexpensive and easy to master. Read the directions carefully, follow them exactly and you should have no problems. If you have questions it’s easy to check the Duplicate Detective in app Help menu.

Does the job but frequent beachball

I’m using El Cap on an iMac. Duplicate Detective seems to do the job of finding duplicates but will frequently beachball out when you’re going through the process of choosing which one to keep. I’m about 2 hours into checking everything and clicking on alternates. About every 20 items it will beachball for 3-4 minutes. I really hope it doesn’t crash and waste all my time. For two bucks it might be worth it if your needs are simple. Otherwise I wish I’d have saved my money.

works correctly. period

This app works exactly as advertised. it takes some time with large photo albums (mine 25,000+) but works perfect. never locks up. (although you might think its locked up, its working - not locked up)

save 1.6 TB on our drobopro

we have a library of creative assets that multiple people use, and over the years I had suspicion that we had many duplicate files. I ran Duplicate Detective and it found 1.6 TB of duplicates. I had it create aliases for all files it removed, and I had it put the files it was removing in the trash, rather than delete them instantly. I will backup the trashed files to an external drive until I know for certain all is well. Overall, I am impressed. Just BE SURE TO SELECT ALL OF THE ITEMS YOU WANT TO REVIEW before clicking the next button, as there is no way to go back and select others to review once you click next

One click and it starts over? Seriously? No back button? Ouch!

Where do I start? I launched this last night specifically to clean out my music files. It ran for about 18 hours during which my MacBook barely ran. I have 8 gig of memory and do not experience this anywhere else so I was really surprised. Finally it comes up and says I have 147gig of dups which was about what I thought. I checked a box that says to keep all of the oldest files and it offered me again to save the oldest file so I verified yes and clicked “Next” Now here’s the fun part, it deleted 1 file only and then asked if I’d like to rerun the program? Are you kidding me? That would take almost an entire year at one file per run. This stinks and the only thing I will share is save the time for a better app.

Removed 17,000 duplicate pictures off my BRAND NEW IMAC, and freed up 12 GB!!!!

I bought a brand new IMAC Retina computer with all the bells and whistles, when I set it up it transferred all my files :) The reason I got a new computer was my 8 year old IMAC was running S L O W despite virus checks, three trips to the Apple store etc…. I decided it was time. I purchased the duplicate detective and installed it to find that my previous IMAC had 17,000 duplicate pics ( maybe when it merged from photos to iPhotos? ) … LOL maybe it would of been cheaper to buy the duplicate detective first before spending thousands of dollars on the new iMac, shhhh don’t tell my husband LOL. Gonna go enjoy 12 GB of freed space :) Cheers!

freed 73 gb!!

holly cow just freed 73 GB!!!
